Nagpur: The 1991 movie ‘Prahar' immortalised actor Nana Patekar for his role as Major Pratap Chauhan, the strict instructor of a commando training school. Patekar, who also directed the movie, was guided about the nuances of military life by an Army officer from the 2nd Maratha Light Infantry (Kali Pachwin), Colonel Sunil Deshpande of Nagpur. On Thursday, Prahar Jagruti Sanstha, an NGO started after retirement by Deshpande to take forward the movie's theme of social responsibility, celebrated its 31st ‘Raising Day'.
Prahar, established by Deshpande on January 9, 1994, and named after the film, has for the last three decades instilled military discipline among youngsters and inculcated social responsibility in the real world. Over the period, as its activities expanded, over 50,000 youngsters have gone through the Prahar training, says the management. As many as 337 of their students have made it into the armed forces. Even today, youngsters are shown the ‘Prahar' movie to inspire them as part of the training.

On Thursday, Prahar's students gathered at the Vanamati Hall in the city as a group of youngsters enacted a play on Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji's life. Earlier, they were addressed by former accountant general (Maharashtra) Sheela Jog, who was the chief guest. Earlier in the morning, a cycle rally was flagged off by commissioner of police Ravinder Singal.
