A Cautionary Tale for Veterans

I came to U.S.VETS with the hope that it would provide the support I needed during a difficult time. Unfortunately, my experience has been anything but supportive. What used to be a sanctuary for veterans 20 years ago has now devolved into a mismanaged organization where discrimination and negligence run rampant.

Specific employees like Levi Cunningham and Steven Bolden have shown a complete lack of professionalism. They went as far as fabricating false accusations against me, leading to unnecessary and humiliating police involvement. Instead of offering the transition support that every veteran is entitled to, I was treated like a criminal, with the police called on me at 7 AM for alleged trespassing—even though I was still a resident and had fulfilled all obligations.

To make matters worse, my personal belongings, worth thousands of dollars, were destroyed and thrown into trash bags without my consent. This negligence caused me significant emotional and financial setbacks. Ironically, this program, which claims to prevent homelessness among veterans, pushed me onto the streets and made my situation worse.

The level of discrimination here is alarming, particularly against those who are not Christian. Staff members made disrespectful comments about my religious beliefs, creating a hostile and unwelcoming environment. Female staff members were dismissive unless they were being praised or flattered, and their unprofessional behavior made it clear that doing their jobs was not a priority. Their laziness and focus on finding their “Cpt. Save-a-Hoe” instead of supporting veterans in need is appalling.

Nonprofits like U.S.VETS often try to keep these problems in-house to protect their image, but veterans deserve transparency. If you’re considering seeking help here, be extremely cautious. The current management prioritizes their staff’s word over the veterans they are supposed to serve, leaving little room for fairness or accountability. Unless you fit their narrative of a “comeback story,” you will likely be ignored, mistreated, or pushed aside.

Honestly, you’d have a better chance of succeeding on Skid Row than relying on the staff at U.S.VETS. This organization has lost its way, and veterans deserve so much better than the neglect, discrimination, and unprofessionalism I experienced here.

It’s truly difficult to convey in a short review how much U.S Vets has helped transform and improved my quality of life. A few years ago I walked into U.S. Vets felling hopeless, without a job and suffering from various medical conditions that I acquired during my military service in the U.S Army. I had lost my private medical insurance and was in serious need of medical help. When I had my first conversation with my rep she informed me that as a result of my military service that I qualified for medical services at the VA hospital. She went on to inform me of so many benefits that I actually did not believe her. The following is a list of things that U.S. Vets has successfully assisted me with: a job at LA Unified, medical insurance at VA, significant financial help as a result of helping me get an 80% disabled status, full tuition paid for both of my kids who attend universities, one of which just got accepted to UCLA law school, and another who just graduated from college and is about to become a teacher. There are many other things that U.S. Vets has helped me with but in short I was broken and disillusioned and now I’m thriving and filled with hope and confidence. Thank you for all you have done for me and my family!

Supportive, knowledgeable, resourceful and connected! My experience with Ryan and Jennifer at US Vets was superb. I appreciated their follow though, which can be hard to find nowadays. They conducted college admission interviews with me that 100% helped me gain the confidence that I needed. I just received my acceptance letter for my master's program.
- They also took the time to provide me with job employment opportunities, fairs, resume review, and college admission statement.
- Would definitely recommend to other vets!!!

I was referred to U.S. Vets by a community partner. Surprisingly, I was immediately contacted by Jennifer Delatte. who put me in touch with Malcolm Harvey in what seemed like a matter of minutes. Jennifer and Malcolm have been a consummate professionals since our first interaction. Malcolm has been very open and honest with our communication and is quick and diligent in responding to my messages or inquiries. I'm big on "customer service" and U.S. Vets have exceeded my expectations to this point. Thank you for all that you do in assisting veterans.
